Mathematics

Intent
We want our curriculum to be centered around current and effective mathematical pedagogies that support children’s conceptual understanding of topics and allow children to be fluent and adaptive in their approach to calculating and problem solving. We aim to present children with mathematics using a range of contexts and representations – in short we want a curriculum which is varied in the way mathematics is presented, so children can use their knowledge and mathematical skills to overcome any mathematical challenge.

Our mathematics curriculum fully aligns to the key principles of the National Curriculum as outlined below:

‘Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.’

Implementation
In order to implement our curriculum, we have developed effective provision and support for teachers to help them put into place a teaching approach that will enable all pupils to succeed.

We use the White Rose Hub materials to support our Long Term Plans and the White Rose Schemes of Learning to inform our Medium Term Planning. Teachers plan their own weekly lessons using White Rose materials to supplement their own ideas. These resources fully support our teaching for mastery approach and allow us to present children with varied models, images and representations.

Utilising a nationally recognised scheme (White Rose Maths), enables us to ensure coverage and progression of content. The curriculum is progressive year to year and logically sequenced to ensure consistency and continuity. It provides teachers with an excellent structure to develop small steps and sequences of learning to ensure pupils can readily take on board and master the knowledge, skills and understanding they need in order to be successful mathematicians.

The guidance given on the use of manipulatives and the visual representations provided helps to ensure teachers can support and provide for those children that do not pick up mathematical concepts quickly, and we use our own skill and subject knowledge to offer additional challenges to deepen the learning of those that make quick progress.

Impact
The impact and measure of this curriculum will show children to have the required factual and procedural knowledge to access the content of their curriculum. Pupils will be fluent in calculations and will be able to reason and problem solve in a range of different contexts both maths specific and related to the wider world. High standards are maintained, with achievement at the end of KS2 above the national average and a proportion of children demonstrating greater depth, at the end of each phase.
